Elon Musk’s social media platform X is preparing to roll out stock and cryptocurrency trading directly within the app, marking a major step in its expansion into financial services. The new feature, called “Smart Cashtags,” will allow users to tap on ticker symbols in posts and execute trades instantly from their timelines, blending social media engagement with real-time investing.
According to X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, Smart Cashtags will transform how users interact with financial markets on social platforms. Instead of switching between brokerage apps and social feeds, investors will be able to buy and sell stocks and cryptocurrencies without leaving X. This move aligns with Musk’s broader goal of turning X into an “everything app” that combines messaging, payments, content sharing, and investing in one ecosystem.
The trading functionality will launch alongside the external beta of X Money, the platform’s in-house digital payments system. Musk confirmed that X Money is already being tested internally and is expected to become available to a limited group of users within the next one to two months. The long-term vision is to integrate banking-style services directly into X, enabling users to send money, manage funds, and invest seamlessly.
Musk’s companies have a well-documented history with cryptocurrency. Tesla currently holds 11,509 bitcoin on its balance sheet, following an initial 42,300 BTC purchase in early 2021. SpaceX reportedly controls around 8,285 BTC. Musk has also been a vocal supporter of dogecoin, with both Tesla and SpaceX accepting DOGE for select merchandise purchases. Earlier this month, he hinted at ambitious plans for dogecoin, saying he may even put DOGE “on the moon.”
By integrating stock trading, crypto investing, and digital payments, X is positioning itself as a powerful fintech and social media hybrid, potentially reshaping how users interact with financial markets online.
